MOTIONS

1. -- THE HONOURABLE THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE -- To Move:

"WHEREAS the Lieutenant Governor in Council appointed a tribunal under section 28 of the Provincial Court Act, 1991 to make recommendations on the salaries and benefits of judges and the chief judge;

AND WHEREAS the tribunal submitted its recommendations to the Minister of Justice on May 26, 2006 except for its recommendations respecting an indemnity for Provincial Court judges which will be submitted no later than March 1, 2007;

AND WHEREAS the report of the 2006 Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Court Judges Salaries and Benefits Tribunal was tabled in this Honourable House on November 27, 2006 under section 28.2 of the Act;

AND WHEREAS the House of Assembly is required under section 28.2 of the Act to approve, vary or reject the report within 30 days of it being tabled;

AND WHEREAS Government has decided to ask the House to accept the recommendations of the tribunal as contained in its report of May 26, 2006;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Honourable House accept the recommendations of the report of the 2006 Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Court Judges Salaries and Benefits Tribunal."

2. -- MS. ANNA THISTLE (Grand Falls-Buchans) -- To Move:

"WHEREAS this province as an energy producer has benefitted because of increased offshore oil revenue;

AND WHEREAS the people of this province are forced to pay some of the highest fuel prices in North America and are suffering because of these high fuel prices;

AND WHEREAS many people on fixed incomes are unable to afford to heat their homes;

AND WHEREAS Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is applying for another increase in electricity rates;

AND WHEREAS the trucking industry in this province is suffering because of high fuel prices;

AND WHEREAS this province's tourism industry is being negatively impacted by high fuel prices;

AND WHEREAS concerns are being raised about the inadequacies of public transportation in this province;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this House of Assembly calls on the Provincial Government to develop and implement a plan to deal with the impact of high fuel prices and high energy taxes in this province."
