MOTIONS

1. -- THE HONOURABLE THE MINISTER OF NATURAL RESOURCES -- To ask leave to introduce a Bill entitled, "An Act To Amend The Electrical Power Control Act, 1994". (Bill No. 32)

2. -- THE HONOURABLE THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE -- To ask leave to introduce a Bill entitled, "An Act To Amend The Provincial Court Act, 1991". (Bill No. 34)

3. -- THE HONOURABLE THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE LEADER -- To ask leave to introduce a Bill entitled, "An Act Respecting The Effective Administration Of The House Of Assembly, The Standards Of Conduct Of Elected Members, And Their Ethical And Accountable Behaviour". (Bill No. 33)

4. -- THE HONOURABLE THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE -- To Move:

"WHEREAS the Lieutenant-Governor in Council appointed a tribunal under section 28 of the Provincial Court Act, 1991 to make recommendations on the salaries and benefits of judges and the chief judge;

AND WHEREAS the Tribunal submitted its recommendations to the Minister of Justice on May 26, 2006 except for its recommendations respecting an indemnity for Provincial Court judges;

AND WHEREAS the recommendations of the Tribunal respecting an indemnity for Provincial Court judges were submitted to the Minister of Justice on April 30, 2007;

AND WHEREAS the report of the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Court Judges Salaries and Benefits Tribunal respecting an indemnity for Provincial Court judges was tabled in this Honourable House on May 10, 2007 under section 28.2 of the Act;

AND WHEREAS the House of Assembly is required under section 28.2 of the Act to approve, vary or reject the report within 30 days of it being tabled;

AND WHEREAS Government has decided to ask the House to accept the recommendations of the tribunal as contained in its report of April 30, 2007;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Honourable House accept the recommendations of the report of the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Court Judges Salaries and Benefits Tribunal respecting an indemnity for Provincial Court judges."

5. -- MR. KELVIN PARSONS (Burgeo & LaPoile) -- To Move:

"BE IT RESOLVED that Mr. Paul Reynolds be appointed Chief Electoral Officer and Commissioner of Members' Interests only after it is verified that he meets the requirements for the appointment equivalent to a DRO under section 21 of the Elections Act."

6. -- MR. WALLY ANDERSEN (Torngat Mountains) -- To Move:

"WHEREAS thick, heavy ice conditions on the northeast and Labrador coasts are now recognized as the worst ice conditions in twenty years and this has delayed the seasonal inshore fishery from starting by over a month or more;

AND WHEREAS EI benefits have already run out for many of the fish harvesters and fish plant workers affected;

AND WHEREAS those affected are facing dire circumstances, including the sale of their personal belongings just to survive;

AND WHEREAS there is a record surplus in the EI fund of over $51-billion and these workers have paid into this fund for protection of unforeseen job-loss;

AND WHEREAS emergency funding for similar programs have been approved in the past;

AND WHEREAS many people and organizations have been speaking out publicly and writing the Federal Government about this hardship;

AND WHEREAS this Government has not shown that it has exhausted all of its options for these fish harvesters and plant workers, including failing to speak to the Prime Minister directly on this critical matter;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Assembly encourage Government to recognize this crisis as a key priority for the people of the areas affected and call upon the Premier to immediately enter into a top level discussion with the Prime Minister to extend EI benefits to assist those residents of Newfoundland and Labrador currently facing this hardship".
