“WHEREAS following the imposition of the
1992 moratorium on northern cod, the Federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans
assured inshore harvesters of the Province that upon the return of the
resource, the first 115,000 tonnes of 2J3KL cod would
be allotted to the adjacent inshore harvesters;
AND WHEREAS the northern cod is showing
a resurgence in numbers;
AND WHEREAS the current Federal
Minister of Fisheries and Oceans has shown contempt for the principle of
adjacency;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this
House urge Government to call for the Federal Minister to reaffirm the federal
policy of returning the first 115,000 metric tonnes
of northern cod quota to the adjacent inshore harvesters of Newfoundland and
Labrador”.
